Knowing what the future holds is a powerful tool. The DesignLights™ Consortium sprang from a growing recognition that the next frontier in lighting efficiency is to improve design practices.

Regional utility companies have been at the forefront of encourage energy-efficient design in the Northeast since the early 1990's. With NEEP acting as a facilitator, a group of electric utilities came together in April 1998 in order to work jointly to promote energy-efficient and high-quality lighting design practices in the commercial marketplace.

This group, now called the DesignLights™ Consortium, has been actively developing and distributing lighting design tools, marketing material, and training to its customers and to lighting design decision-makers throughout the Northeast. The DLC has focused its efforts on "naturally occurring" lighting events such as remodeling, renovation, retrofit, or new construction activity. These events represent opportunities to increase the amount of space that routinely receives benefits of a well-designed lighting system, and to cut cost.

By bringing together utilities and other stakeholders to support market transformation efforts on a regional level, the DLC hopes to promote energy-efficiency and high quality lighting in commercial buildings throughout the Northeast, one community at a time. Our assistance is targeted at:

  • property management firms
  • large retail chains
  • state governments
  • municipal facilities
  • as well as other market players that influence design, specification, selection, and installation of lighting systems

The DLC's sponsors support our efforts through:

  • market research
  • customer outreach and education
  • customer/contractor incentives
  • development of technical guidelines
  • pilot/demonstration projects
  • lighting designer/contractor training
  • and support for improved building energy code requirements and implementation

DLC's knowhow Guide featured in "Architectural Lighting"

DesignLight Consortium's revised version of the "Office Lighting knowhow" guide is featured in the Jan/Feb issue of "Architectural Lighting", as an 8-page advertisement sponsored by NYSERDA, National Grid and NEEP, Inc.

"It is the most informative and generally understandable source of information on the subject I have ever seen on practical application of lighting in the office (and ancillary spaces) environment " said Murray Kidd, AIA of KPS Group, Inc.
