The DLC specifies typical fixture housings in which retrofit kits should be tested. This ensures that test results are obtained under common conditions, and under conditions in which the products would typically be installed. In providing this list, the DLC does not endorse or exclude any particular make or model frame for use in energy efficiency programs.
Note that in each recommended variation, there is a section for “Pre-approved Equivalents”. The fixtures listed under “Pre-approved Equivalents” have been requested by applicants and approved by the DLC for use in retrofit kit testing. In selecting a fixture for testing, the applicant shall consider the purpose of subjecting the tested kit to extreme confinement for thermal endurance, and shall select a fixture for testing based on the intended application of the retrofit kit.
At this time, the DLC does not qualify screw-in “lamps” intended as HID replacements as retrofit kits.
Outdoor Area & Roadway Luminaires
- If the kit is specific to shoebox fixtures (not applicable to cobraheads), choose a fixture from among those listed herein under shoebox.
- If the kit is specific to cobrahead fixtures (not applicable to shoeboxes), choose a fixture from among those listed herein under cobrahead.
- If the kit may be applied to both cobraheads and shoebox fixtures, choose a fixture from among those listed herein under either shoebox or cobrahead.
Kits designed for larger-sized housings must demonstrate that they do not fit in the smaller housing sizes. This can be done by submitting a CAD file with the kit installed in the reference small cobrahead, or by providing dimensions of your retrofit kit (on spec sheets or technical drawings) and comparison against the approved smaller reference housings that clearly demonstrate that the kit will not fit into those housings. DLC reserves the right to ask for additional information and to make final judgement on whether the kit is eligible in the larger size housings.

The kit shall be tested, fully and properly mounted in a troffer as similar as possible to the kit’s intended use. Troffer retrofit kits will be categorized according to whether they are simple, “strip” style kits that replace the light source, but leave the existing troffer’s optical system mostly intact, or whether they replace and retrofit the entire fixture, including a new optical system.
The DLC defines all tube-style LED products that use the lamp holders (i.e. sockets or tombstones) in the luminaire to mechanically or electrically connect to the fixture housing and electric supply to fall under the linear replacement lamps category. Only retrofit products that do not connect to the troffer using lamp holders kits are eligible under the retrofit kit categories.
